'Singham' screening resumes in Karnataka

'Singham' screening resumes in Karnataka
The screening of Bollywood film ''Singham'' commenced in Karnataka Saturday after the removal of some ''objectionable'' dialogues, a day after disruptions in its screening, officials said.

Pro-Kannada activists from the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike had gathered in front of Tribhuvan theatre here Friday to protest what they called anti-Kannada dialogues in the Ajay Devgn-Kajal Agarwal starrer.

Tribhuvan theatre's assistant manager Anant told IANS that the objectionable dialogues had been removed from all the prints and digital discs of the film which released Friday.

Shows were organised in the Tribhuvan theatre where a group of police officers from nearby Upparpet police station watched the film along with the activists, he said.
"The pro-Kannada activists and police authorities have confirmed that there are no objectionable dialogues in the film now," Anant said.

The police officers later sent a report to their higher authorities. The screening will now resume in 27 theatres where it was scheduled to be screened.

Karnataka Rakshana Vedike president Narayana Gowda told IANS Friday that one of the dialogues in the film refers to "Kannadigas as dogs".

The film's screening was also disrupted in Bidar, Belgaum, Gulbarga, Hubli and Kolar.

Directed by Rohit Shetty, "Singham" is the remake of a Tamil blockbuster with the same name. It has been remade in Kannada as "Kempe Gowda".

Brazil plane crashes after take-off, 16 dead

Brazil plane crashes after take-off, 16 dead

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - An airplane crashed and exploded shortly after take-off from Brazil's northeastern city of Recife early on Wednesday, killing all 16 people on board, rescue and air force officials said.

The plane, operated by small regional airline Noar Linhas Aereas, plunged into scrubland near a highway after taking off at 6:51 a.m. (0951 GMT) for its planned journey to another northeastern city, Natal.

Television images of the debris showed the charred body of the plane smashed into small pieces and only the tail section partly intact.

According to a statement from Brazil's Air Force, the pilot reported mechanical problems shortly after take-off and tried to make an emergency landing on a beach.

One witness told the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper that he saw a woman alive in the plane after it crashed.

"I saw a woman in the window calling for help. After it exploded, there was nothing that could be done," local security guard Erandir Rodrigues da Silva was quoted as saying.

Noar, which opened its business just over a year ago and operates 278 flights a week, suspended all of its other flights on Wednesday.

The plane that crashed was a twin-engine L-410 built by LET Aircraft Industries in the Czech Republic.

3 Mumbai bombings minutes apart kill 21, wound 141

3 Mumbai bombings minutes apart kill 21, wound 141

MUMBAI, India— Three coordinated bombings tore through the heart of India's busy financial capital during rush hour Wednesday, killing 21 people and wounding 141 in the worst terrorist attack in the country since the 2008 Mumbai siege.

Bloody bodies were strewn in the dirt of Mumbai's crowded neighborhoods and markets. Doors were ripped off storefronts, motorcycles were charred and a bus stop was shredded. After the blasts in three separate neighborhoods, police set up checkpoints and were put on high alert.

The bombings came just months after peace talks resumed between India and Pakistan, which New Delhi has blamed for past attacks.

Arup Patnaik, a top police officer, said the attackers used improvised explosive devices in the attack, hidden in an umbrella in the Jhaveri Bazaar jewelry market and kept in a car in the business district of Opera House.

The third blast in Dadar area was caused by an explosive device concealed in an electric meter at a bus stop, the Press Trust of India news agency said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condemned the blasts and appealed to the people of Mumbai "to remain calm and show a united face."

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, and Indian officials refused to speculate on who might be behind the blasts.

Indian officials have accused Pakistan's powerful spy agency of helping coordinate and fund earlier attacks, including the Mumbai siege, which killed 166 people over three days. Peace talks between the countries were suspended after the siege and resumed only recently.

Pakistan's government expressed distress about the loss of lives and injuries soon after Wednesday's blasts were reported. President Barack Obama also condemned the "outrageous attacks."

"The American people will stand with the Indian people in times of trial, and we will offer support to India's efforts to bring the perpetrators of these terrible crimes to justice," he said in a statement. "I have no doubt that India will overcome these deplorable terrorist attacks."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said she will go ahead with her plans to visit India next week despite the bombings. Standing with India "is more important than ever," she said.

The bombings began with an explosion that ripped through the famed Jhaveri Bazaar jewelry market at 6:54 p.m. A minute later, a blast hit the busy business district of Opera House, several miles (kilometers) away in southern Mumbai. At 7:05 p.m., the third bomb exploded in the crowded neighborhood of Dadar in central Mumbai, according to police.

Because of the close timing of the blasts, "we infer that this was a coordinated attack by terrorists," Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram said in New Delhi.

Chidambaram later flew to Mumbai and visited the blast sites as forensic experts collected the evidence. Their task was hampered by a steady drizzle overnight washing away blood stains and other marks.

Investigators covered the blast sites with plastic sheets to protect the evidence left by the explosions, said police officer Shailesh Kadam said.

A lifeless body lay on a cart. Survivors carried the wounded to taxis. One man was dragged out of the area on a red board used as a stretcher. Bleeding victims crowded into the back of a cargo truck to be taken to a hospital, where wards were filled with the wounded, slathered in white burn cream.

At Jhaveri Bazaar, a witness described two motorcycles exploding in flames and saw at least six bodies.

"People were shouting 'Help me, help me,'" the man told Headlines Today television.

People hugged and wept. Crowds gathered in the blast areas as police questioned witnesses, and investigators wearing gloves sifted through the debris for clues.

The government said the blasts killed 21 people and wounded 141 others.

As day broke Thursday, Mumbai began to return to normal life, with children holding umbrellas walking to their schools. Milk suppliers and vegetable vendors made rounds of the areas as municipal workers swept the streets.

Authorities kept schools open in the metropolis despite the attack.

Police and fire officers removed two dozen scooters and motorcycles from the jewelry market that were overturned and damaged by the impact of the powerful explosion.

"India is not going to cow down," Cabinet minister Farooq Abdullah said. "Let those perpetrators of this terror remember, we will find them and Inshallah (God willing) we will give them the justice that India believes in."

A U.S. official said there were no immediate claims of responsibility, or firm indication of which terrorist group might be behind the attack. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss matters of intelligence.

The blasts marked the first major attack on Mumbai since 10 militants laid siege to the city for 60 hours in November 2008. That attack targeted two luxury hotels, a Jewish center and a busy train station.

China calls on world to normalize ties with Sudan

China calls on world to normalize ties with Sudan

BEIJING (Reuters) - The world should recognize the efforts made by Sudan in bringing peace to its southern region, now an independent state, and normalize relations with Khartoum, state media on Thursday quoted a senior Chinese diplomat as saying.

Sudan has long been under a U.S. trade embargo, and its leader, President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, faces indictment from the International Criminal Court over war crimes charges stemming from long-running fighting in the Darfur region.

But Beijing has maintained close trade, energy and military ties with Khartoum, and last month played host to Bashir.

"The Sudanese government has shown the political will to push the north-south peace process, and has made great efforts in the this regard," the official Xinhua news agency cited China's deputy representative at the United Nations, Wang Min.

Wang called on the international community to "fully normalize relations with Sudan as soon as possible, so the Sudanese people can enjoy peace, dignity and development at the earliest opportunity," Xinhua added.

While China relied on Sudan as its sixth largest source of oil imports in 2010, its has been keen to build a relationship with leaders in the south, which became the world's newest country over the weekend.

Wang urged the two countries to resolve remaining issues between them through "peaceful dialogue," and also called on other countries to help South Sudan.

"We call on the international community to continue providing support for South Sudan's political stability and practical help for South Sudan's economic recovery and development," Wang added.
China recognized South Sudan on Saturday, and President Hu Jintao has promised strong ties with the new country.

Afghan television channel, Tolo TV, reported a second explosion near the mosque, but gave no further details.

Salman Khan praises Ajay Devgan physique Singham

Salman Khan praises Ajay Devgan physique Singham

Salman's surely going modest, considering the fact that he is known to have one of the best bodies in the tinsel town. Salman Khan recently saw the first look of Rohit Shetty’s ‘Singham’ that has Ajay Devgn flaunt his new found toned physique and is all gung-ho about it. Asin falls flat for Sajid's Subhaan

Asin falls flat for Sajid's Subhaan

She’s considered to be Salman Khan’s favourite leading lady, and also Akshay Kumar’s. But ask Asin who her favourite leading man is, and the reply will probably be a prompt “Subhaan”. No, he isn’t an upcoming actor you’re yet to hear of — he’s just producer Sajid Nadiadwala’s nine-year-old son!

Subhaan, who has accompanied Sajid on the Housefull 2 shoot, seems so smitten by the pretty Asin that he spends all his time with her, unit sources say. “During the London schedule of the film, Subhaan just didn’t leave Asin’s side. He showered her with attention and brought her everything she needed,” our source said.

No wonder then, that Asin was overheard saying that while Sallu and Akki were the perfect gentlemen to work with, Subhaan has by far surpassed them all.

Asin on her part, is quite kicked about her latest gehri dosti. “I am fond of kids, and Subhaan is no different. He’s polite and never throws tantrums,” she says.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has been denied permission to interact with the students of Lucknow University as part of a promotional event for ‘Aarakshan’. Amitabh Bachchan had to address Lucknow University students on the issue of job reservation to promote Aarakshan, but the varsity has denied permission.

Director Prakash Jha thinks that the university got scared as it's a sensitive issue.

"They didn't know whether we'd be arguing for or against job reservation. It's a thorny issue in that state, I understand. But are we supposed to sweep sensitive issues under the carpet? How will our society develop if there's no debate? I think they just got scared. Don't ask of whom," Jha told Mumbai Mirror.

Jha had already chalked out plans for a Q&A session between Amitabh and the university students.

The director says, "Earlier during the marketing of Rajneeti we were similarly barred from entering academic institutions in Delhi to discuss present day politics. We all know who they were scared of."

Bollywood actress Vidya Balan refused to wear sleeveless tops for her upcoming movie ‘Dirty Picture’. Her plight could be be understood, as the actress has put on some weight and a bikini would be a bit too much in such a situation.

As Vidya has to portray a sexy image for the role of Silk Smitha in the movie, it is expected that she has to carry a sexy image.

Sources from the production unit have said that the actress is not at all fussy about her costumes and has completely trusted her directors. The actress has only suggested that she would be refraining to wear sleeveless tops.

Meanwhile, Katy expressed an “obsession” with felines.

A source says, “It’s a long-drawn romantic sequence. It can be actually called a cameo by Priyanka. It will require her to perform a lot of stunts as well. RA.One is essentially a fantasy film, and this is sort of a sweet dream sequence.”

For Priyanka’s costumes, the producers are consulting Manish Malhotra to create a larger than life look.

Source says,“Shah Rukh is extremely comfortable working with Priyanka. Having worked in Don, Don 2 and an item number in Billu together, they share a great working rapport. However, he did consult Anubhav Sinha before asking the actress.”

Priyank is currently on a vacation in United States. She will fly down to Mumbai for Shah Rukh’s dream venture Ra.One. the song will be shot during the next.

Ruling out all predictions, Vishal has declared his upcoming movie with Ajay, which will have Anushka Sharma playing the female lead.

Vishal is highly impressed by Anushka’s work and that’s why he declared her as the main lead for this film. He said, “I loved Anushka in “Band Baaja Baaraat”. But more than that, I can't forget her very impressive debut in “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”. She is one of the finest actresses amongst the new lot”.

He further cleared that this movie is a comedy with dark undertones and is based on social satire. As per sources the film will most probably head for shoot next year in mid January.

When asked about sidelining SRK, Vishal justified saying that the project is very special to him and he would love to dedicate his full time to it. But that would only happen once he is free with all prior commitments. As you wish Vishal, and hope SRK manages to free himself for you!

Daniel Radcliffe: I am a huge Sachin Tendulkar fan.

Daniel Radcliffe

For one, he is a big fan of cricket and Sachin Tendulkar and not necessarily in that order. Daniel cherishes an autograph of the Master Blaster. "My friends and I were thrilled to meet Sachin and get his autograph. I am a huge fan, he is truly a legend."

"I wanted to visit India during the Cricket World Cup but got so caught up with my Broadway musical, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, that it left me with no time. But cricket or no cricket, I am certainly planning a trip to India soon," he told TOI.

The British actor knows a lot about India. He said, "I have heard and read a lot about India, especially Midnight's Children, and would like to know more about the country. Indians are huge cricket fans, just like me."

As the Harry Potter film series draws to a close, the actor wants to take home two pairs of glasses that his onscreen persona sports as a reminder of the memorable time he spent on the sets. "I will also take home friendship which will last me a lifetime."

Daniel has been portraying the boy wizard for nearly a decade. "I do not want to break my Harry Potter image, but have been trying other characters and hope the audience will like them the way they did Harry Potter." The actor is confident that his Harry Potter image will not come in the way of his future films. "I don't think of it, but one has to move on. My next film, The Woman in Black, will release in 2012."

The British actor knows about Shah Rukh Khan starrer Chak De. "I have watched a couple of Bollywood films and found them every entertaining."

Though Emma Watson, known for her portrayal of know-it-all Hermione Granger, is paired alongside Daniel in the film, he looks at her as his sister. I think Harry Potter fans have a literary curiosity and imagination that is not necessarily associated with fans of all other big franchises, both past and present," said the actor. "Take that curiosity out into the world, do extraordinary things."

Shahid Kapoor: I would love to act with dad

Shahid Kapoor: I would love to act with dad

While Shahid himself is no slouch in the acting department, he has, much like his father, excelled in complicated roles. But it came as a surprise when the star actor demanded more from his son, egging him on for more takes. In fact, Kapur has based Shahid's character on his younger self while living in Ludhiana, Punjab.

Talking about the experience, Shahid says, "Dad has a way of acting and showing how he wants a scene done. Initially, I found it very intimidating. The first few days were very tough for me. It was also hard to replicate what he was showing me. I was extremely nervous and awkward. But somewhere we found a comfort level and I can say that the making of this film helped us develop a whole new relationship."

Was he treated differently because he was the director's son? "Well, yes. I have worked with loads of directors but have never been given a hint that I gave a crappy shot! Often dad would make me do several retakes and do the scene exactly how he wanted it. So, I had to work that much harder."

What's the one thing he would say is the highlight of working with his dad? "This experience just made me realise that I would love to act in a film with him."

KV Kamath: Economy growing at 11%

KV Kamath: Economy growing at 11%

BANGALORE: The Indian economy is growing faster than the officially quoted 8%-8.5% GDP growth rate, said KV Kamath, the newly appointed chairman of Infosys Technologies.

At a meet-the-press event here on Saturday, Kamath said India is actually growing at 11%-12%. Kamath said the economic data used to compute growth rates are not accurate. "As long as we don't have the right statistics, there is a question over the growth rate," he said.

There are several uncounted and unaccounted figures which could easily add another 3-4 percentage points to India's GDP, he said. India, he said, is thus growing at the double-digit rates we have become used to seeing in China in recent years and Japan in the 1980s. As for India's per capita income, Kamath said India stands where China was 10 years ago, and in the next 10 years, it will stand at where China's per capita income stands today. Kamath said for this growth to be truly transformational and benefit a larger proportion of the masses, India has to put more emphasis on certain areas.

The manufacturing sector must further expand as it has the capacity to generate large-scale employment. Infrastructure bottlenecks must be addressed as they hinder development.

Also, consumer demand must be kept robust to drive the economy. He said technology too could help in greater percolation of benefits to the poor. The use of the unique identification platform for cash-transfer schemes using Aadhaar-linked bank accounts would prevent leakages in subsidy programmes like LPG and kerosene. On the high interest rate environment, Kamath said the most affected would be retail customers who take home loans, auto loans, etc. Businesses can tide over these times with internal accruals, he said.

Review: Google Plus

Review: Google Plus

My first thought about Google Plus: "Here we go again." After Google's earlier attempts at social networking failed spectacularly, it was easy to scoff at this seeming Facebook wannabe.

Its "Picasa ultimatum" didn't help much either. If you have an account with Picasa, Google's photo-sharing service, the first thing Google asks is whether you'd want to share your Picasa photos. Say no, and you're not allowed to sign up at all. That seemed unnecessarily harsh.

But I quickly became addicted to Google Plus, a free service that the company is testing with a small group of users for now. It has smart and thoughtful solutions to some irksome limits entrenched in other social-media sites, mainly related to privacy settings and how to share links and posts with groups.

Google Plus seems aimed at people who are more interested in sharing things with people or groups with similar interests rather than simply amassing the biggest number of online "friends." Its seamless integration with other Google services you may use, from search to online documents, makes it easier to share things online.

May The Stork Visit You Soon

Whether you've just started trying for a baby or have been at it for a while, keep these simple things in mind to increase your chances of conceiving.

- Have sex regularly. While it may seem like the most obvious thing to do, given the hectic schedules that most people follow, sex doesn't become a priority. Fertility specialists recommend sex daily especially if you're not timing your cycles or you have irregular periods.

- Find out when you ovulate. Women with regular 28-day menstrual cycles can count 14 days from the first day of their period to determine their ovulation date. If your cycles aren't regular use an ovulation kit to help you discover when you're at your fertile best. A woman with a 28-day cycle should start testing her urine on day nine or ten after the start of her period.

- Experts say that making love a day before you ovulate is better. An egg survives for only 12 to 24 hours after ovulation, so if you begin to ovulate in the morning and wait until night to have sex, the egg may lose its viability by the time the sperm gets to it. Alsom, cervical mucus becomes thick and impenetrable after ovulation, making it difficult for the sperm to do its job. As soon as you get a hormonal surge, have sex the same day and for the next two days. Pregnancy rates are high two days before ovulation. Sperm can live inside the uterus for 24 to 48 hours, which means there will be plenty on hand to greet the egg once ovulation starts.

- Don't make getting pregnant seem like a chore. Most couples lose interest when there isn't any fun involved. Add some innovation and give it time. Most couples get pregnant within six months to a year of trying.

World Population to Hit Seven Billion by October

World Population to Hit Seven Billion by October

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 7, 2011 (IPS) - The United Nations commemorates World Population Day next week against the backdrop of an upcoming landmark event: global population hitting the seven billion mark by late October this year.

According to current projections, and with some of the world's poorest nations doubling their populations in the next decade, the second milestone will be in 2025: an eight billion population over the next 14 years.

Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, executive director of the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA), told IPS seven billion represents a challenge, an opportunity and a call to action.

On World Population Day Jul. 11, he will be launching a campaign called "7 Billion Actions".

"It will engage people on what it means to live in a world with seven billion people and encourage action on issues that affect all of us," he added.

Together, he said, "we can forge the future with young people, advance rights for girls and women, and safeguard the natural resources on which we all depend."

The rise in population is expected to have a devastating impact on some 215 million women who want - but do not have - access to quality reproductive health and family planning services.

Tamara Kreinin, executive director of Women and Population at the U.N. Foundation, told IPS, "With the world's population poised to cross the seven billion mark in October 2011 and continue to grow over several more decades, this unmet need is only likely to increase."

She said the quality and availability of family planning services is instrumental in interrupting the inter-generational cycle of poverty and creating stronger, more stable families and communities.

Investing in voluntary family planning programmes gives women the tools to make critical decisions about the size of their families and spacing of their pregnancies, she noted.

Kreinin said meeting the need for family planning would result in a 32-percent decrease in maternal deaths, and reduce infant mortality by 10 percent.

Dr. Osotimehin told IPS protecting reproductive health and rights "is fundamental to our collective future and sustainable development".

"Together, we can meet the needs of some 215 million women in developing countries who want to plan and space their births but do not have access to modern contraception," he said. "Together, we can prevent the deaths of 1,000 women every day from complications of pregnancy and childbirth."

He said there is also an opportunity and responsibility to invest in the world's 1.8 billion adolescents and youth aged 10 to 24.

They constitute more than a quarter of the world's population and almost 90 percent live in developing countries.

"Every young person deserves education, including sexuality education, and access to comprehensive health services," he noted.

With the right policies, investments and social support, young people can enjoy healthier lives free of poverty and enhance prospects for peace and stability, he added.

"As the most interconnected population, young people are already transforming society, politics and culture. By more actively engaging women and young people, we can build a better future for all generations," Dr. Osotimehin declared.

The world's five most populous countries are China (1.3 billion), India (1.2 billion), the United States (310.2 million), Indonesia (242.9 million) and Brazil (201.1 million).

A new study titled "Africa's Demographic Multiplication", released last month and commissioned by the Washington-based Globalist Research Center, points out that Africa's population has more than tripled during the second half of the 20th century, growing from 230 million to 811 million.

As a result, Africa has become more populous than Europe. Nigeria, Africa's most populous country at 158 million, is expected to grow to 730 million by century's end, making it larger than Europe's projected population of 675 million.

Nigeria is currently the only African country with a population exceeding 100 million.

But 10 other countries in the African continent are expected to join that club before the close of the century: the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Niger, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

Jose Miguel Guzman, chief of the UNFPA's Population and Development Branch, told IPS that globally, the population growth rate is not as high as it has been in the past.

Fertility decline in most countries of the world has contributed to a decline in population growth rates.

"But if we take into consideration least developed countries (LDCs) or most of the sub-Saharan countries, the situation is quite different," Guzman said.

In most of these countries, he said, fertility is still high, and the rate of growth is also high.

In some cases, it is as high as three percent, which implies that the population in these areas will double in about 20 to 25 years.

The date for the eight billion population milestone is projected now to be 2025, he predicted.

Kreinin told IPS that in many countries, every dollar spent on voluntary family planning saves at least four dollars that would otherwise be spent treating complications arising from unplanned pregnancies.

Despite the low cost and many benefits of voluntary family planning, world leaders have not placed a priority on its funding.

Emerging countries are spending about half of what they pledged at the historic 1994 International Conference on Population Development (ICPD) for reproductive health spending, while developed countries, including the U.S., have provided less than a quarter of the promised spending, she added.

She said U.S. investment in international family planning has traditionally been strong, but support peaked in 1995 and has declined significantly since.

Although in nominal terms funding has recovered in recent years, Kreinin said, it still remains 40 percent below peak funding levels when adjusted for inflation, even as the unmet need continues to grow.
