Review: Google Plus

Review: Google Plus

My first thought about Google Plus: "Here we go again." After Google's earlier attempts at social networking failed spectacularly, it was easy to scoff at this seeming Facebook wannabe.

Its "Picasa ultimatum" didn't help much either. If you have an account with Picasa, Google's photo-sharing service, the first thing Google asks is whether you'd want to share your Picasa photos. Say no, and you're not allowed to sign up at all. That seemed unnecessarily harsh.

But I quickly became addicted to Google Plus, a free service that the company is testing with a small group of users for now. It has smart and thoughtful solutions to some irksome limits entrenched in other social-media sites, mainly related to privacy settings and how to share links and posts with groups.

Google Plus seems aimed at people who are more interested in sharing things with people or groups with similar interests rather than simply amassing the biggest number of online "friends." Its seamless integration with other Google services you may use, from search to online documents, makes it easier to share things online.

Pixable Adds a Timeline of Facebook Photos You Liked & Commented On

Pixable Adds a Timeline of Facebook Photos You Liked & Commented On

Remember all of those photos that caught your eye in your Facebook news feed? Probably not. But startup Pixable wants to help change that. On Thursday, it added a “my likes & comments” category to its photo-sharing apps.

The iPhone, iPad and browser apps connect with Facebook and sort you and your friends’ photos into categories like “most popular” or “family updates.” It also makes piles of the most popular Flickr and Instagram photos.

With the new category, users also get a log of what was most interesting to them in real time on Facebook. Since I’m personally a fairly conservative liker on Facebook, the collection of photos in the pile turned out to be something of a highlight reel.

Pixable is one of the only photo startups that is focusing on aggregating and browsing online photos rather creating a photo service of its own — a smart strategy in a crowded startup space that big players like Twitter have recently entered.

OPENFEINT SNAGS A FORMER PLAYDOM EXEC TO LEAD PRODUCT

OPENFEINT SNAGS A FORMER PLAYDOM EXEC TO LEAD PRODUCT

Mobile social faming company OpenFeint has nabbed a pretty key hire today—former Playdom exec Ethan Fassett. Fasset will be leading product development at OpenFeint, as senior vice president of product.

Previously, Fassett was Playdom’s executive producer of its San Francisco studio. He helped drive product strategy for Playdom’s San Francisco studio, with a focus on player community engagement and monetization. He helped launch Playdom’s retail-themed social game, Market Street, which peaked at one million daily active users. Prior to Playdom, Fassett worked at teenage virtual world Gaia.

As the SVP of product, Fassett will be working on growing player engagement for OpenFeint through new communication features. He will also aim to improve player acquisition for game developers with distribution tools and programs.

OpenFeint, which was acquired by Japanese gaming company GREE earlier this year for $104 million, currently reaches 90 million users and powers 6,000 games across iOS and Android.

Mid-sized IT firms go for experienced hires

As India moves ahead to become a high-end technology outsourcing destination, information technology (IT) companies are finding it hard to tap the required talents with skill set of specific technologies. In many cases, clients also prefer experienced employees for niche projects, which is only adding to the woes of the IT services providers.

According to industry experts, this is posing a major hurdle for the mid-sized IT services companies, as they have to manage cost, margin and projects with available talents.

"Most of the new projects are very important for the clients, which requires niche talent.

As the projects becoming more technology-driven, many of our clients are asking for experienced employees.

Our aim is to satisfy our customer demands, for which we do more lateral hiring than freshers," said Anand Talwar, senior vice-president (talent management), ITC Infotech, a mid-sized IT company.

How to Use Strong and Secure Passwords

How to Use Strong and Secure Passwords

In all probability, most of us would be aware that using obvious or guessable passwords such as “password” or your pet's name isn't a good idea at all. But then what options do you really have to come up with a strong and secure password?

First things first, you should have a different, fairly long and very strong password for each account. It's tempting to use the same password for all of your online accounts, but doing so puts every account in jeopardy if one of them gets hacked.

To break into accounts, hackers often employ a method called “dictionary attack”, which involves using words straight from the dictionary to guess the passwords. So it is strongly recommended that you don't use standard words as your passwords; rather try creating meaningless words from a combination of letters, numbers and symbols. And don't just replace letters in a word with a simple (e.g. 'A' with the @ symbol) because that's a very common trick. The password can be strengthened by using a blend of lower and uppercase letters.

The password should be quite complicated. But still, try and use something which you would be able to remember. Come up with something which incorporates various alphanumeric characters. Ideally, it should be a mnemonic sort of thing which you can instantly memorise. But if you see that this is not happening then spend some time in memorizing that password.

Now remembering more than one passwords can be a daunting task. This is where a password manager comes into the picture. KeePass is a fairly good, free password-management tool that runs on Windows and Mac OS X. It stores all the passwords in one encrypted database which can be accessed by a single master password.

Then there's a multi-platform password manager called LastPass which comes with the capability of auto-syncing different computers and browsers, thereby, giving you the access to your encrypted database from any device. However, the catch here is that you sacrifice the security of keeping your password list combined to a single drive.

These password managers are great but not 100% safe. The best password is the one you generate yourself, which is highly complicated with a mix of upper and lower case letters, symbols and numbers. The trick lies in picking up a short phrase or a long word and get creative with it.

Audi Celebrates Tenth Le Mans title with new R8 V8 Limited Edition

Audi Celebrates Tenth Le Mans title with new R8 V8 Limited Edition

Audi’s R8 Coupe has always been an exceptionally fast sports coupe thanks to its cutting edge design and outstanding performance figures. And though the R8 model is currently available in an even more powerful 5.2 liter V10 version and a topless Spyder model, there is now something far more exclusive that the german car maker has brought forth to celebrate Audi’s historic victory at the 2011 Le Mans race (Read : 2011 Le Mans Race)

Audi Sport has contested in the Le Mans 24-hour race twelve times since 1999, achieving a podium finish on all occasions 10 out of which they managed to win. In 2011, Audi won the Le Mans with an entirely new TDI diesel-powered ‘closed’ coupe in the most emphatic manner ever imaginable.

After two of its three cars crashed out of the race in a timespan of just a few minutes seperating the two accidents, the third and only R18 coupe that survived the entire duration of the race managed to maintain its lead position all the way to finish line giving the team its most memorable win ever in Le Mans Racing history before 250,000 jubiliant spectators.

To celebrate this, Audi has just introduced a stunning new Limited Edition Audi R8 Coupe, whose exclusive titanium-effect paintwork and enhanced standard equipment will begin and end with just 100 examples, that are currently scheduled for production. A similar finish will also find itself on the 19-inch ‘5-arm double-spoke Y design’ alloy wheels, which is inspired by the R8 GT Coupe. Bright Red brake callipers on the new Audi R8 Le Mans Edition will also be another differentiating feature that will come as standard.

Connectivity, Entertainment and Lighting options on the Limited Edition R8 model get a real boost from the base model. The list is long starting with Satellite navigation, a Audi Music Interface (AMI), an interior light package and to top it all a premium Bang and Olufsen sound system, as well as mobile phone preparation via a Bluetooth interface with integrated seat-belt microphones.

On the inside, the Limited Edition R8 Coupe is marked out by crimson red accents on its plush leather seats, which also feature red contrast stitching. The sporting character is further underlined by stainless steel pedals and illuminated door sills with bright aluminium inserts carrying the R8 logo.

The new R8 V8 Limited Edition, which becomes available to order next month will be sold in the UK for a price of £93,935 or Rs 67,49,233.2. Audi has not announced any plans of bringing this special R8 model to India anytime soon, but rest assured if they do we will be the first ones to inform you.

Apple seeks faster trial in Samsung patent case

Apple seeks faster trial in Samsung patent case

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple asked a US court to issue a preliminary injunction against Samsung on four patents in a dispute between the two companies, according to a court filing.

The iPhone and iPad maker also asked for a faster trial schedule to resolve all of its intellectual property claims against Samsung.

The legal battle between the two tech giants has been building since April, when Apple sued Samsung in a California federal court. Apple claims the South Korean firm's Galaxy line of mobile phones and tablets "slavishly" copies the iPhone and iPad.

Apple was Samsung's second-biggest customer last year after Sony, accounting for about $5.7 billion of sales to Samsung mainly by purchasing semiconductors, according to Samsung's annual report.

Samsung then countersued in California, and earlier this week asked the US International Trade Commission to impose an import ban on Apple's iPhones and iPads.

In the latest salvo, Apple asked the U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif. on Friday to issue a preliminary injunction that would prevent Samsung from infringing three Apple design patents, and one utility patent, according to a court filing.

If granted, the preliminary injunction would apply to Samsung products including the Galaxy S 4G smartphone and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet computer, Apple's court filing says.

"We're going to actively protect and defend our intellectual property and our ability to provide consumers with innovative technology," Samsung spokesman Kim Titus said.

Infosys, Tata beat global majors to emerge as top brands in India

Infosys, Tata beat global majors to emerge as top brands in India

NEW DELHI: IT giant Infosys and salt-to-software conglomerate Tata have emerged as the top 2 brands in India, beating global majors like Google, Nokia and Facebook, in a new index.

According to TLG's index of emerging market 'Thought Leaders', seven out of the top ten brands in India were indigenous firms.

TLG, in partnership with international research consultancy firm GlobeScan, launched the index wherein government ministers, directors of blue chip companies and newspaper editors were asked to identify corporate brands with the power to change the attitudes and behaviour of consumers, employees or politicians -- defined as " Thought Leaders".

The list of top 20 firms was peppered with Indian brands including Larsen & Toubro (5th), State Bank of India (7th), Life Insurance Corporation of India (12th), Bharti Airtel (13th), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (14th), Aditya Birla Group (15th), The Oberoi Group (16th), HDFC Bank (17th), Dr Reddy's Laboratories (18th) and Ranbaxy Laboratories (19th).

"... Absence of many 'western' major brands from the top 20 may concern CEOs who are trying to crack the BRICs. They need to refocus their energies on telling their leadership story," TLG founder Malcolm Gooderham said.

The top 10 features two joint ventures between local and overseas companies. The JVs are Maruti-Suzuki (4th) and Hindustan Unilever (9th).

Commenting on the findings, GlobeScan Research director Oliver Martin said, "As the public's faith in corporate leadership is declining in India, companies must excel in business innovation and progressive CSR to retain a Thought Leadership position."

The top-ranked foreign firm is Google, which enters the index at number three, followed by Nokia at sixth rank and Facebook at eighth position.

"Western firms that succeed (Google, Nokia and Facebook) are those that adapt their models to local conditions, or ones that form JVs with locals in the driving seat ( Suzuki, Unilever)," the report said.

Google, through its YouTube platform, streams live Indian Premier League cricket matches, while Facebook offers mobile access for a special rate of 1 rupee a day.

Maruti Suzuki AltoK10 vs Chevrolet Spark: Comparison

Maruti Suzuki AltoK10 vs Chevrolet Spark: Comparison

Two very big auto manufacturers, and two very small cars. But don’t let the superlative used to describe the latter distract you from truly understanding the absolute marvels that are the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 and GM’s now successful small car, the Chevrolet Spark.

Two equally cute hatches even with their diminutive proportions, the new Alto K10 and the Chevrolet Spark sport their own style that ought to grow on their owners, irrespective of which one they finally pick. The Alto carries the familiar shape of India’s best-selling car, but with smart new accents and a slightly longer hood. The Spark on the other hand has classic hatchback proportions and a quirky air about it, which many may find lovable.

So, what then is the distinguishing factor, when style and good looks are complementary with either package? The primary difference does not quite come to the surface when looking at the performance attributes of the two cars. Chevrolet’s Spark, that is powered by a 1000cc four cylinder petrol engine produces 63 PS of power and 90.3 Nm of torque. However, with MSIL 996cc inline-three cylinder K10 petrol engine now under the new Alto’s hood, the already peppy hatch now ups its power and torque figures by nearly 50 per cent over the Alto F8D, giving out 68PS at 6200rpm and easily whipping up 90Nm of torque at 3500rpm.

Another important area, where the two put up a tough fight is the overall fuel efficiency that continues to hover around the 14.8 kmpl mark on the new Alto K10. But the overall fuel efficiency on the Chevrolet Spark is estimated to swing between 15.1 kmpl to 20.7 kmpl depending on the road scenario you choose to take this flame of a hatch over.

City Cruises in London May Ferry Tourists Across the Thames

City Cruises in London May Ferry Tourists Across the Thames

A tour guide company in London has disclosed to the public its plans that it would build a huge sightseeing boat by spring of 2012. City Cruises with its international reputation would offer the magic experience of the Thames by launching the largest vessel of 600 passengers’ capacity, describing as tourism vessel of next generation. The sightseeing vessel would ferry very popular tourist spots such as Maritime Greenwich, and Parliament. The vessel’s estimated cost will be £4 million with amenities such as two bars, an open top deck, and main deck, which provides panoramic views. Public would enjoy this great city tour with 360-degree windows, and is an extraordinarily great way to see the city either in air-conditioned deck or open-air deck areas.

With the rising oil prices, there is awareness of adopting environment friendly energy sources. The solar panels continuously supply the energy needed for recharging the batteries. It is provided with energy-efficient diesel engines and onboard recycling facilities. The frequency of river boat services enable the travellers to reach the east of London where most of the events of Olympic will be held. The commuter-oriented Thames Clippers and City Cruises provide high quality services for the sightseeing guests.

The organizers have estimated some 150,000 people, which is eight percent of the total spectators, could arrive by water boats to witness the much awaited events of Olympics. Though the plan of building cable car system approved by Boris Johnson, Mayor of London across the Thames river which were supposed to operate before next summer’s Olympic Games 2012, unfortunately now according to reports the project may not be ready for the Olympics which could have transported the visitors every thirty seconds over the Thames, carrying up to 2,500 passengers an hour in each direction.

WikiLeaks’s founder, Julian Assange, filed an application to patent the use of his name

WikiLeaks’s founder, Julian Assange, filed an application to patent the use of his name

According to international media, the request was made by the law firm of Assange two weeks ago, with the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO), an organization that takes care of intellectual property in that region. The request covers the use of the mark Julian Assange in public activities (lectures), service journalism, news, texts, education services, advertising and entertainment.

The request will be formalized next Friday, 4. After this period, the IPO will set a period of two months for positions contrary to the claim. If there is no manifestation, it will be granted to Assange.

Last Thursday, Judge Howard Riddle, Belmarsh court, decided that extradition of the founder of WikiLeaks to Sweden, where he answers in court on charges of rape and sexual harassment. Assange can still appeal the decision.

Chromebook: Big Brother to Netbook, Distant 3rd Cousin to Tablet

Chromebook: Big Brother to Netbook, Distant 3rd Cousin to Tablet

Samsung's Series 5 Chromebook hit the shelves Wednesday, selling for US$500 for a 3G version and $430 for a WiFi-only model. A teardown performed by IHS iSuppli senior analyst Wayne Lam found that the Series 5 Chromebook has hardware attributes commonly found in a full-featured notebook.

The Chromebook Series 5 is "an interesting device because it's priced like a netbook, but if you look at the construct, it somewhat resembles what Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) trying to do with the MacBook Air," Lam told TechNewsWorld.

The Chromebook Series 5 could initially find it difficult to gain acceptance among users because they may not see how they can use it, Lam suggested. "It's a product awaiting the creation of a use case," Lam said.

That's similar to a criticism often lobbed at tablets, though some models have proven to be better sellers than others.

What the Series 5 Is Made Of

The Series 5 measures about 0.8 inches high -- roughly the same height as a penny stood on edge. It has a 12.1-inch anti-reflective, anti-glare SuperBright display with 300nit brightness. SuperBright is Samsung's name for its glossy screen.

A "nit" is a measure of luminance, meaning the amount of light that passes through or is emitted from a particular area falling within a given solid angle. It's used to characterize the brightness of displays. A typical computer display is rated at between 50 nits and 300 nits.

The Series 5 Chromebook weighs 3.3 pounds. It has a battery life of up to 8.5 hours and has an Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) Dual-core Atom N570 processor.

It has 2GB of memory and a 16GB solid state drive.

The device comes with a full-sized Chrome keyboard and an oversized multi-touch trackpad. It starts up in less than 10 seconds, and resumes instantly from standby. It has two USB ports.

Connectivity is provided through 3G, WLAN, and a four-in-one card reader.

The Samsung Chromebook comes bundled with up to 100 MB per month of mobile broadband service from Verizon for two years.

IHS iSuppli's Teardown

The total hardware cost of the Chromebook Series 5 is just over $334, iSuppli said.

In terms of features and connectivity, the device mostly resembles a value notebook or 3G netbook, iSuppli stated.

However, the Samsung Chromebook includes some advanced hardware features not typically found in low-cost notebooks, iSuppli said.

The motherboard is the device's single most expensive subsystem, coming in at over $86, or 26 percent, of the total bill of materials cost.

The Chromebook Series 5 has an Infineon Technologies Trusted Platform Module, something more usually seen in enterprise-level computers than in value-priced computing devices, iSuppli pointed out.

Bright Lights, Big Touchpad

LCD display with an aspect ratio of 16:10, iSuppli found. This costs $58, and is the second most expensive subsystem in the device.

The Chromebook "to some extent follows the MacBook Air's design, with its large 300nit display, oversized touchpad and large keyboard," iSuppli's Lam said.

The Chromebook Series 5 Experience

Though many comparisons to netbooks may be made, the Chromebook should not be compared with a tablet, iSuppli's Lam said.

"First of all, it's not touch-based; also, it allows you to do more conventional things like content creation, whereas with tablets you're basically consuming content," Lam explained.

"Think of this as ideal for folks who like the idea of a tablet for in-home use but want an integrated keyboard rather than a touchscreen," Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told TechNewsWorld.

"This device anticipates a world that doesn't yet exist," Enderle said. "Think of it as the equivalent to DOS in the 1980s -- it will be known more for what it will become than what it is," he added.

However, the need for connectivity and access to the Web may count against Chromebooks in general.

"Chromebooks are going to seriously struggle regardless of who makes them," Bob O'Donnell, a program vice president at IDC, told TechNewsWorld.

"The price points are high, people don't necessarily have connectivity, 3G data plans are very expensive, and with 3G, people get a limited amount of bandwidth per month, and they will probably go through it in a couple of days," O'Donnell elaborated.

Google's Next Nexus: Straight Android, No Chaser

Google's Next Nexus: Straight Android, No Chaser
Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) soon-to-be-released Nexus 4G smartphone is going to have a dual-core processor, a very large screen, and high-definition video capture capabilities, according to a post on Boy Genius Report.

It's not yet clear whether Google will offer the device under its own brand or will work closely with a device maker to create a flagship device the way it did with the Motorola (NYSE: MOT) Droid.

The device will likely be rolled out to the market around Thanksgiving, Boy Genius Report speculates.

"Thanksgiving will be the ideal time to bring this to market, from everyone's viewpoint," Ramon Llamas, a senior analyst at IDC, told TechNewsWorld. "That's when a whole lot of folks are trying to get their stuff out."

Google did not respond to requests for comment by press time.

The Nexus 4G's Reported Specs

The Nexus 4G will reportedly be an ultra-thin device.

It will have a dual-core CPU running at either 1.2GHz or 1.5 GHz, Boy Genius Reports speculates. That processor will likely be an OMAP 4460 or an ultra low-power 28nm Snapdragon Krait processor from Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM).

OMAP (Open Multimedia Application Platform) is the name for a proprietary line of systems on chips (SoCs) developed by Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) for portable and mobile multimedia applications.

The Snapdragon Krait is Qualcomm's next-generation mobile processor architecture.

The Nexus 4G will reportedly have a large 720p high-definition screen, a 4G LTE radio, 1080p video capture and playback capability, a 1MP front-facing camera and a 5MP rear camera.

The smartphone will reportedly run Android 4.0, aka "Ice Cream Sandwich," and will have advanced Android features such as software-based menu controls instead of hardware buttons.

Deconstructing the Nexus 4G Info

"For the most part, some of the reported features are on par with what is being offered, while others will fall into the timeframe of what's going to be introduced by Thanksgiving," IDC's Llamas said.

Chances are that Google is working with a smartphone manufacturer to create the device, Llamas opined. He picked Samsung and Taiwanese manufacturer HTC as the most likely possibilities.

In May, leaks about what was purported to be a Nexus smartphone from HTC that ran Ice Cream Sandwich hit the Internet. At that time, there were indications that Google was testing both an HSPA+ and a CDMA version of the device.

The Nexus 4G will likely be targeted mainly at developers because "it offers Android in its purest form without any of those fancy user interfaces, and developers don't want the extraneous stuff," Llamas said. "Everyone else is secondary."

How the Nexus 4G will be distributed will depend first on who the device maker is and what kind of connectivity it wants, Llamas said.

"Whether Google goes to box stores or carriers will depend on who they partner with," Llamas elaborated. "Best Buy has proven to be a good partner to the Nexus lineup, but the number of locations it has pales in comparison to the number of carrier retail stores out there."

And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Lulz

And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Lulz

The hacker group LulzSec has been carrying out a security-busting blitzkrieg across the Web over the last few weeks, and its targets are getting bigger and bigger. You can tell where it's been by the path of sites left shivering in a fetal position -- sites belonging to organizations like PBS, Sony (NYSE: SNE), Bethesda Softworks, and even the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.

LulzSec's latest stunt's been to set up a so-called dial-a-hack hotline. You can call in and make a case that Lulz's hackers should make their next target whatever group or company you presently have a beef with. If Lulz likes your suggestion, they'll do what they do and run roughshod over that organization's computer systems, leaking data, shutting down systems and causing general cyberchaos. Judging by the sites they've hit so far, it seems some of them are pretty good at it, too.

What's perhaps most unusual about LulzSec is its motive. Its hackers don't seem to be doing what they do for a direct profit -- so far there's no indication they're stealing credit card data to sell on the black market, which is where the money is for for-profit hackers. The word "Lulz" in the name suggests they're doing it for the pure hell of it. It's Internetspeak for the joy derived from causing disorder in the lives of others. But perhaps the point isn't entirely to just go around griefing up the place. They also seem intent on proving a point by actively demonstrating how just how weak so many computer security systems really are, even ones used by hundreds of thousands of people.

That's not to say what LulzSec is doing is harmless. Publicizing the usernames and passwords for tens of thousands of online accounts isn't harmless, and that's exactly what Lulz has done on multiple occasions. That could easily result in fraud committed by a third party. Weaknesses in the security systems used to protect these users' info might be partially to blame, but generally accepted etiquette among hackers holds that if you find a weakness, you tell the site's admins about it and give them ample time to fix it before threatening to spew the data. LulzSec apparently just spews away.

There's even been speculation that some members of LulzSec might actually be white-hat hackers by day, working at familiar and trusted security companies that do play by the rules. Then they go home, change into some shade of gray perhaps, and go about "fixing" security in a very different way.

Important detail: LulzSec is not the same as Anonymous. In fact, the two hacker groups have reportedly butted heads recently, and 4chan, a site closely associated with Anonymous, was down for a few hours this week, possibly due to a LulzSec strike. It appears the scuffle is rooted in video games -- LulzSec's attack on various online game networks pulled the rug out from under certain games favored by 4channers, and they vowed mortal revenge.

Having said that, technology advances have also helped, which you can clearly see in the new breed of hybrid vehicles already or coming to market. You have to remember that these vehicles use around 50 percent less gas than a standard version, and remember that your town will be a quieter place, as they Hybrids run much quieter.

More often than not the government will give you tax breaks when buying greener cars, in some cases even offering free parking but is this really enough? Remember that you have to pay a higher ticket price in the first place, so you will have to keep it more than five years to get the full benefit.

There are other issues as well, such as the safety aspect if you break down, as emergency services will worry about electrocution from those batteries – much like track marshals do in F1 with KERS. The biggest downfall has to be with how expensive these hybrids will be when it comes to servicing or repair bills. Now that we have shared this little bit of knowledge with you will be able to make the right decision? If you choose not to go down the hybrid route, then why not try these fuel economy tips.
