Gurunath Meiyappan arrested by Mumbai Police for betting

Gurunath Meiyappan arrested by Mumbai Police for betting

Gurunath Meiyappan, a top official of the Chennai Super Kings franchise and son-in-law of the BCCI president N Srinivasan, has been formally arrested by Mumbai Police on charges of cheating, forgery and fraud. The development, late on Friday night, is the most serious setback to the IPL in its six-year history and has serious implications for the BCCI as well given the names involved.

As of early Saturday morning there was no news of an emergency BCCI meeting but it is expected that events will move fast through the day, to discuss the issue of leadership - though Srinivasan insisted he would not step down - and also Chennai Super Kings' participation in the IPL final on Sunday.

Gurunath had been summoned to Mumbai for questioning over betting and links to bookies and flew in on Friday evening.

"We have interrogated Mr Gurunath after he arrived here at the crime branch headquarters," Himanshu Roy, the joint commissioner of Mumbai Police, said. "We have gone through questioning with him in detail and after due deliberation, we have arrived at the conclusion there is evidence of involvement in offence we are investigating and therefore he has been placed under arrest. He will be produced in court within 24 hours as per law."

Gurunath Meiyappan arrested by Mumbai Police for betting

Reports suggest Gurunath's interrogation in Mumbai will continue through Friday night, and he will also be confronted with Virender "Vindoo" Dara Singh, the actor arrested earlier this week for alleged contact with bookies. Police investigations suggested that Vindoo and Gurunath were in frequent telephonic contact. Vindoo was also seen in the CSK box at IPL matches.

Gurunath's lawyer PS Raman said: "We are exploring all legal possibilities. We are waiting for the remand report before reading the charges against him."

Srinivasan had not commented in public since the reports first emerged on Wednesday that his son-in-law was linked to the IPL scandal, but after the arrest he maintained he would not resign as BCCI president. "I have done nothing wrong," he told NDTV. "I am not resigning, the board is largely supportive of me."

Gurunath's connection to Super Kings was the subject of dispute through the day. He was the public face of the franchise, his Twitter handle said he was the "team principal", he was seen as Super Kings' representative at auctions and at IPL owners' meetings. Yet on Friday evening India Cements, the owners of the franchise and of which Srinivasan is the managing director, said Gurunath was only an honorary member of the team management.

Gurunath Meiyappan arrested by Mumbai Police for betting

The implications of Gurunath's arrest involve both Super Kings, who have qualified for the final to be played on May 26, and Srinivasan.

His arrest brings into question Super Kings' participation in the final - under IPL rules, the BCCI-IPL can terminate a franchise agreement "with immediate effect if: c) The Franchise, any Franchise Group Company and/ or any owner acts in any way which has a material adverse effect upon the reputation or standing of the League, BCCI-IPL, BCCI, the Franchise, the team (or any other team in the League) and/ or the game of cricket."

More importantly, and with wider implication, Srinivasan's position within the BCCI is likely to be under serious threat - not only because Meiyappan happens to be his son-in-law but because Srinivasan heads India Cements, who are owners of the Super Kings. The conflict of interest that arises from Srinivasan's dual position as BCCI president and de facto owner of an IPL franchise now has a serious immediate implication: he will, as board president, have to oversee any disciplinary action against either Gurunath or the franchise.

Salman Khan's co-star Sana Khan missing after kidnapping accusation

Sana Khan, who was Salman Khan’s favourite contestant in Bigg Boss’ sixth season and also bagged a leading role in his home production Mental, has gone missing since April 30 and the production team is worried about her next shooting schedule for the film.

Sana has been accused of helping her cousin Naved and his friends in an attempt to abduct a 15-year-old girl. Naved became friends with the minor on Facebook and they started hanging out with a mutual group of friends. But Naved proposed marriage to her and she declined. The boy continued to stalk her. The girl shut her Facebook account and completely cut herself off from him. But Naved continued to pursue her, and when she became firm, he issued threats to her.

On April 30, the gang of friends including Naved’s sister Sana, who was at the wheel, stopped the girl when she was on her way back home from her tuition in Sanpada, Navi Mumbai. Naved and his friends tried to drag her into the car, but she managed to free herself.

When she reached home, Naved, his friends and Sana had already reached there and were arguing with her mother. After they left, the girl’s mother lodged a police complaint. Naved and his friends Kshitij and Vismit were arrested the same evening. They were charged with kidnapping, wrongful restraint and trespass.

Sana though has gone underground since then. The police looked for her at her Oshiwara apartment, but she wasn’t there. She has a Mental schedule in Lavasa early next week, and the production team is now worried about the repercussions of the incident. A senior police inspector of Turbhe police station said his team are still looking for Sana.

Rakhi Sawant calls Anna Hazare the 'Ram of Kalyug'

Rakhi Sawant calls Anna Hazare the 'Ram of Kalyug'
It seems that now the item girl has targeted the Gandhian crusader and left her previous choices - Congress' Rahul Gandhi and yoga guru Baba Ramdev. Drama Queen Rakhi Sawant recently expressed her strong views about Anna Hazare and his civil society team who is fighting against corruption.

Rakhi says,“ Just when things seemed to be moving in the right direction, three musketeers of Team Anna - Prashant Bhushan, Arvind Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi went ahead and spoilt everything with their high and mighty attitude! Teen tigaada, kaam bigaada! I really feel Arvind Kejriwal is the Raavan, who is trying to take advantage of Anna Hazare, who is the Ram of Kalyug. Kejriwal has an ulterior motive, and I'm sure he's going to join politics a few months down the line. Time will prove me right.”

Getting concerned about Anna’s health Rakhi says,“Right now, I'm really worried about his health. People forgot Gandhi and remember him only on his birth anniversary. Do you think they will remember Anna forever? Now he must relent and take care of his health. Arre khaa pee ke lado naa! Kejriwal and his cronies are not fasting, I wonder why? They are happily consuming meals and doing bhashanbaazi, whereas poor Anna is hungry for so many days!”

While on the same note, Rakhi contradicts her views. Rakhi says that people should not consider Anna Hazare as god. Rakhi says,“ I have seen many idols of Ganapati being made with Anna's face! My god, that's just not right! Anna, after all, is a human being. And I feel he should give importance to a strong Lokpal Bill, and not allow Kejriwal and company to keep harping about their own version. Arre koi Lakshman Rekha thode hee hai jo ek baar laga di to mit nahin sakti! I pay huge amounts of tax too, and I also want that bribery should be eradicated. Till date, I have never paid any bribery in my life! But, you can't achieve miracles overnight! There are so many strong laws against dowry, rape etc. But, have these things stopped? Anna's team has to respect the Parliament and democratic principles. And Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi etc. must not sabotage this movement!”

3 Mumbai bombings minutes apart kill 21, wound 141

3 Mumbai bombings minutes apart kill 21, wound 141

MUMBAI, India— Three coordinated bombings tore through the heart of India's busy financial capital during rush hour Wednesday, killing 21 people and wounding 141 in the worst terrorist attack in the country since the 2008 Mumbai siege.

Bloody bodies were strewn in the dirt of Mumbai's crowded neighborhoods and markets. Doors were ripped off storefronts, motorcycles were charred and a bus stop was shredded. After the blasts in three separate neighborhoods, police set up checkpoints and were put on high alert.

The bombings came just months after peace talks resumed between India and Pakistan, which New Delhi has blamed for past attacks.

Arup Patnaik, a top police officer, said the attackers used improvised explosive devices in the attack, hidden in an umbrella in the Jhaveri Bazaar jewelry market and kept in a car in the business district of Opera House.

The third blast in Dadar area was caused by an explosive device concealed in an electric meter at a bus stop, the Press Trust of India news agency said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condemned the blasts and appealed to the people of Mumbai "to remain calm and show a united face."

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, and Indian officials refused to speculate on who might be behind the blasts.

Indian officials have accused Pakistan's powerful spy agency of helping coordinate and fund earlier attacks, including the Mumbai siege, which killed 166 people over three days. Peace talks between the countries were suspended after the siege and resumed only recently.

Pakistan's government expressed distress about the loss of lives and injuries soon after Wednesday's blasts were reported. President Barack Obama also condemned the "outrageous attacks."

"The American people will stand with the Indian people in times of trial, and we will offer support to India's efforts to bring the perpetrators of these terrible crimes to justice," he said in a statement. "I have no doubt that India will overcome these deplorable terrorist attacks."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said she will go ahead with her plans to visit India next week despite the bombings. Standing with India "is more important than ever," she said.

The bombings began with an explosion that ripped through the famed Jhaveri Bazaar jewelry market at 6:54 p.m. A minute later, a blast hit the busy business district of Opera House, several miles (kilometers) away in southern Mumbai. At 7:05 p.m., the third bomb exploded in the crowded neighborhood of Dadar in central Mumbai, according to police.

Because of the close timing of the blasts, "we infer that this was a coordinated attack by terrorists," Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram said in New Delhi.

Chidambaram later flew to Mumbai and visited the blast sites as forensic experts collected the evidence. Their task was hampered by a steady drizzle overnight washing away blood stains and other marks.

Investigators covered the blast sites with plastic sheets to protect the evidence left by the explosions, said police officer Shailesh Kadam said.

A lifeless body lay on a cart. Survivors carried the wounded to taxis. One man was dragged out of the area on a red board used as a stretcher. Bleeding victims crowded into the back of a cargo truck to be taken to a hospital, where wards were filled with the wounded, slathered in white burn cream.

At Jhaveri Bazaar, a witness described two motorcycles exploding in flames and saw at least six bodies.

"People were shouting 'Help me, help me,'" the man told Headlines Today television.

People hugged and wept. Crowds gathered in the blast areas as police questioned witnesses, and investigators wearing gloves sifted through the debris for clues.

The government said the blasts killed 21 people and wounded 141 others.

As day broke Thursday, Mumbai began to return to normal life, with children holding umbrellas walking to their schools. Milk suppliers and vegetable vendors made rounds of the areas as municipal workers swept the streets.

Authorities kept schools open in the metropolis despite the attack.

Police and fire officers removed two dozen scooters and motorcycles from the jewelry market that were overturned and damaged by the impact of the powerful explosion.

"India is not going to cow down," Cabinet minister Farooq Abdullah said. "Let those perpetrators of this terror remember, we will find them and Inshallah (God willing) we will give them the justice that India believes in."

A U.S. official said there were no immediate claims of responsibility, or firm indication of which terrorist group might be behind the attack. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss matters of intelligence.

The blasts marked the first major attack on Mumbai since 10 militants laid siege to the city for 60 hours in November 2008. That attack targeted two luxury hotels, a Jewish center and a busy train station.

KV Kamath: Economy growing at 11%

KV Kamath: Economy growing at 11%

BANGALORE: The Indian economy is growing faster than the officially quoted 8%-8.5% GDP growth rate, said KV Kamath, the newly appointed chairman of Infosys Technologies.

At a meet-the-press event here on Saturday, Kamath said India is actually growing at 11%-12%. Kamath said the economic data used to compute growth rates are not accurate. "As long as we don't have the right statistics, there is a question over the growth rate," he said.

There are several uncounted and unaccounted figures which could easily add another 3-4 percentage points to India's GDP, he said. India, he said, is thus growing at the double-digit rates we have become used to seeing in China in recent years and Japan in the 1980s. As for India's per capita income, Kamath said India stands where China was 10 years ago, and in the next 10 years, it will stand at where China's per capita income stands today. Kamath said for this growth to be truly transformational and benefit a larger proportion of the masses, India has to put more emphasis on certain areas.

The manufacturing sector must further expand as it has the capacity to generate large-scale employment. Infrastructure bottlenecks must be addressed as they hinder development.

Also, consumer demand must be kept robust to drive the economy. He said technology too could help in greater percolation of benefits to the poor. The use of the unique identification platform for cash-transfer schemes using Aadhaar-linked bank accounts would prevent leakages in subsidy programmes like LPG and kerosene. On the high interest rate environment, Kamath said the most affected would be retail customers who take home loans, auto loans, etc. Businesses can tide over these times with internal accruals, he said.

Rupee hits 2-month high as inflows rise

Rupee hits 2-month high as inflows rise

"Capital flows have been good and non-deliverable forwards arbitrage is helping the rupee gain", said Vikas Chittiprolu, a Senior Forex Dealer with Andhra Bank.

The above statement has been released by the bank official post-noticing that, on Friday, the rupee climbed to a two-month high and that too was supported by rising dollar inflows, which further lead to gains in Asian peers and the euro's strength.

According to the reports, on Friday at 11:36 a. m. (0606 GMT), the partially convertible rupee that ended at 44.425/435 on Thursday, climbed to 44.3375/3400 per dollar after hitting 44.30, which is its highest figure since May 3 .

In context to same, Securities and Exchange Board of India released their latest data which showed that the climb in rupee has further resulted into foreign funds bringing in shares worth $2.25 billion over 10 sessions to Wednesday and also, the rupee has appreciated 1.4% over this period.

Chittiprolu also talked about the reasons helping the rupee gain, in his statement and said that persistent bids from importers especially from oil refiners lent a big hand in keeping the rupee's gains in check. Also, he added that the traders were awaiting U. S. non-farms data for direction.

Telangana bandh: Violence at Osmania university

Telangana bandh: Violence at Osmania university

HYDERABAD: After a brief lull, violence returned to the Osmania University (OU) campus on Tuesday, the first day of the 48-hour bandh call given by the Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC). Several students and a few policemen sustained minor injuries in pitched battles fought all through the day on the campus.

Trouble started at about 10.45 am when a group of 200 students took out a rally from Arts College and headed towards NCC gate to welcome the suspended TDP leader Nagam Janardhan Reddy into the campus. The OUJAC had invited the former TDP leader to the campus to address the gathering and persuade the six students, all sub-inspector post aspirants, who have been on an indefinite hunger strike for the past six days demanding that the Centre delete 14-F of the Presidential Order, to call it off.

However, police prevented the students from leaving the campus and stopped Nagam Janardhan Reddy from entering it. The former TDP leader along with five of his associates, including resigned legislator K Harishwar Reddy, were taken into preventive custody and shifted to the Amberpet police station. The arrest of the Nagam group infuriated the OU students and they tried to force their way out through the police cordon.

To disperse the students, police resorted to a lathicharge. According to OU Vidyarthi Ikyavedika president K Mahesh, at least 10 students sustained minor injuries in the incident. After retreating into the campus, angry students started pelting stones at the police personnel, resulting in injuries to a CRPF constable and a CAR constable. Police responded to stone pelting by lobbing teargas shells and stun grenades.

Third accused held guilty of Nitish Katara murder

Third accused held guilty of Nitish Katara murder
NEW DELHI: Gangster Sukhdev Pehalwan, who had helped former Rajya Sabha member DP Yadav's son Vikas Yadav and nephew Vishal Yadav in abducting and killing Nitish Katara in 2002 for being friendly to their sister, too was convicted on Wednesday for murder and kidnapping by a Delhi court.

Additional sessions judge JR Aryan held Pehalwan, whose trial had been separated due to his jumping bail and turning an absconder, was also found guilty of destroying evidence. His trial was conducted separately after his arrest in 2005.

The court said it will hear arguments on quantum of sentence for Pehalwan on Thursday. The court said that Pehalwan was with Vikas and Vishal Yadav during the murder.

Vikas and Vishal were earlier awarded rigorous life imprisonment for their role in the murder of Nitish, a business executive and son of an IAS officer.

According to the prosecution, Pehalwan was present with the convicts Yadavs in their car after they had abducted Nitish from a marriage function at Ghaziabad and killed him on the night of February 16, 2002.

He was chargesheeted in April 2006 for committing the penal offences of murder, abduction and destruction of evidence.

Ghulam Nabi Azad briefs PM on Telangana issue

Ghulam Nabi Azad briefs PM on Telangana issue
Azad said the MLAs and MPs are “open to discussions” and that the Centre should start discussions on the issue and “those who have resigned have not closed their doors.”

Rao, whose Telangana Rashtrya Samithi is spearheading the statehood movement, and his colleague and actor Vijaya Shanti faxed their resignations from Lok Sabha to Speaker Meira Kumar, while two TDP MPs -Nama Nageswara Rao and Ramesh Rathod met her in New Delhi and put in their papers.

101 of the total 119 legislators from the Telangana region have resigned since yesterday with more MLAs of Congress, TDP and all 11 legislators of the TRS quitting today.

Four members of CPI and two from the BJP also resigned from the Assembly.

Azad said he appreciates the sentiments of the lawmakers from the Telangana region and said they are willing to be engaged in the process.

“They told me that since the Centre did not take any decision they were under pressure from people to resign. They are ready for dialogue,” he said.

On whether the resignations would be accepted, he said since the Legislative Assembly and Parliament are independent bodies, “we have no say on this.”

However, the Minister said the Telangana issue is not a “time-bound” one.

Earlier, speaking to a television channel, Azad said an all-party meeting on the Telangana issue needs to be preceded by talks with the people of different regions of Andhra Pradesh and political parties.

“It is a sensitive and a complex issue which requires wider consultations,” Azad said.
Congress sources said a decision on the issue is unlikely soon.

Party spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said, “We are ceased of the matter. An appropriate decision would be taken at an appropriate time.”

Schools, colleges, shops and other commercial establishments were closed and public transport services were hit due to the bandh in all Telangana districts.

The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) suspended its services at various places as a precautionary measures and commuters had a tough time reaching their destinations.

The bandh supporters held demonstrations and stopped vehicular movement at various places.
City buses of APSRTC in Hyderabad largely remained off the roads and consequently, the auto drivers had a field day.

Police have made elaborate security arrangements in view of the bandh and no untoward incidents was reported from anywhere in the morning hours.
